Greetings from Rwanda

Mwaramutse, my friends! Hello from Rwanda!
After a 28 hour journey I have arrived in Rwanda and I am quite speechless at the amazing sites we are seeing. the scenery is breathtaking. Quite different to what I expected. There are lots of hills and more Banana trees than you could imagine. The school is huge - more than 2000 pupils and everyone is very friendly. The hotel is basic, but clean and in a beautiful setting. We are in the district of Rwamagana, in the eastern province of Rwanda.
We have had a few glimpses of local bird life...
and this little cutie was right outside my room!
Any help on identifying them would be greatly appreciated. My Birds of britain is no use here! Hope to be back soon

Those birds are amazing - I know what you mean about Birds of Britain - there should be an equivalent Collins Guide to Africa available if you're near a bookshop.

Ooh, what an adventure, Sally! Wonderful and the photos are brilliant. Had a quick look and I think the little 'cutie' is a Common Fiscal but can't find the other one yet - will keep on looking for you... enjoy it and don't work too hard :-)

Fabulous photos Sally and so pleased to hear your trip is exceeding all expectations.

I had a quick look at the books my neighbour has written, he's an ornithology expert in desert and exotic birds, hence the reason for his current trek through Russia into Mongolia. Your pictures look rather like these:

Orange-breasted Bushshrike

Brown Flycathcer

But don't take my word for it, I'm just going by the colours.

Take care and can't wait to hear all the news of your trip first hand.

I'm glad you arrived safely, Sally and are having a great time. What stunning photos. Sorry, I'm rubbish at identifying British birds, let alone foreign ones!!
Enjoy every minute.

Great photos!! The second bird is a Bulbul, a 'Black-eyed Bulbul'. It is one of my favourite birds. Not sure about the first one though.
